"Greg, I know of you only from the film, and unfortunately your own posts. At
first I was very much appreciative of you're commitment to the " smoking out" of
Osama and pals. However your disregard for the SFO in Afghanistan and your
constant " American" flag waving and the irresponsible dissemination of large
amounts of US dollars, has brought about me a dislike for you that may not be
equalled in my lifetime. Your personal attack on this filmmaker seems consistent
with you re inability to accept responsibility for your outrageous and unsound
actions. You are not alone my friend, we will always be watching. You are a
conflict of interest here, and the beard is not that local. Cheers, 1st SFOD D "

Hollywood Docket: Be Careful Who You
Hire
Case: Gregory Shade v. Daniel Patrick
Gorman, Case No. cv093471 (San Francisco District), filed July 18
Claims: Copyright infringement, unjust enrichment,
breach of contract, conversion, violation of computer fraud and abuse
act
Allegations: Plaintiff is the holder of
intellectual property rights over video footage and still photographs
made by Melik Kaylan on life in Afghanistan and other Central Asian
countries following the events of 9/11. Plaintiff hired Gorman and his
business, Charlie Seven Films, in 2003 to help produce a documentary
using the footage. The arrangement didn't work out and Shade wanted his
footage back. Plaintiff alleges that not all of the raw material was
returned, some of it was damaged, and some of it found its way
unauthorized in the defendants' documentary film entitled "American
Hero." Plaintiff demands an injunction and monetary damages.
Filing attorney: Steven Hammond
... It is further alleged that the threatened crime, on its face and under
the circumstances in which it was made, was so unequivocal,
unconditional, immediate and specific as to convey to Dennis Murphy and
Jonathan Taylor a gravity of purpose and an immediate prospect of
execution.

Burma
Greg Shade 36 years old, Burma in 1988
Author: K.E. Grubbs Jr. The Register, Sunday,
November 27, 1988
Abstract (Summary)
The exploit began on Thursday, Nov. 10, with a telephone call that would
disrupt the normally contemplative atmosphere of our editorial page staff
office. An acquaintance, Greg Shade, who had done spectacularly well in the
import business since I first met him 18-19 years ago, was putting together the
trip to meet in Thailand with Burmese dissidents. He held out the possibility of
going over the insurgents' camps in .....

Abstract (Summary)
In fact, Mr. Rohrabacher's remarks to the 800 students at Thay Baw Boe were
not particularly incendiary -- but I get ahead of myself. The congressman-elect
and I were invited by Greg Shade, an importer in the region who shares in our
acquaintanceship of two decades. Mr. Shade wanted us to direct international
attention to what he regards as one of the great human dramas of the times.(Rep.
Stephen Solarz of the Asian and Pacific Affairs subcommittee had preceded us in
a sanctioned visit with officials and dissidents in Rangoon in September.)
Burmese Exile Tells of Junta Brutality; Military Crushed Pro-Democracy Uprising,
Killing Thousands
Author: Sean Kelly, Sep 13, 1989
Abstract (Summary)
At Three Pagodas Pass, Min was elected leader of the camp's 500 students. He
organized and taught classes and directed work programs......
At the camp, Min met Americans Greg Shade and George Pittaway, two political
activists, who were visiting border camps, helping administer medicine and
documenting atrocities against students.......
"When I met Min, he spoke a little English," Shade said, explaining that he
was hoping to find someone to bring back to the United States to give a
first-hand account of life under Maung's government. "He can project a message
much better than most of the other students are capable of doing. He was number
one in all the camps I visited. The students liked him."
With help from Reps. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), Bill Richardson (D-N.M.)
and Steven Schiff (R-N.M.), the INS and the State Department, Min was taken to
the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, where he met with officials, who eventually agreed
to let him enter the United States for a year........

BURMA DISPATCH
On a Far Frontier
America neglects a place of pivotal strategic importance.
by MELIK KAYLAN,
Sunday, February 18, 2007 12:01 A.M. EST
Abstract (Summary)
ON THE THAILAND-BURMA BORDER--From the Burma side,
refugees straggle in small groups across the Salween river or over misty blue
hills, fleeing the Burmese army. Otherwise, it's all forest and silence. After
dark, only isolated military outposts display distant lights.
In contrast, all along the Thai side, miniature border
towns with gaily lit eateries play music and host sandaled tourists day and
night. Many are real tourists, some are clearly pretending, and one soon learns
to pick out the odd ones: huge Scotsmen or Russians with military bearing and
unlikely rope bags, purposeful North Koreans, Chinese and Americans--intel
operatives all, watching each other and the activity on the border, as the Thais
watch the watchers, and the working girls solicit anyone who smiles. In these
tropical entrepots straight out of Graham Greene, desire and paranoia spice the
air in equal measure.
Yet almost no help from the U.S. reaches the ethnic
alliance in a context where a little can go far, and where ethical foreign
policy and realpolitik coincide naturally. What scant support there is comes
mostly from individual or faith-based donations. Extraordinary, selfless
characters make all the difference in such places. The Free Burma Rangers, a
grassroots movement led by Western volunteers along with scores of locals,
provide humanitarian and medical relief deep into the war zone. They also
document atrocities. They are pretty much alone. Almost alone--now, there's also
Greg Shade.
An utterly American individualist, self-financing and
untiringly practical, he was last seen on Afghanistan's borders handing out
picture-leaflets of al Qaeda suspects just before the U.S. invasion. (Crazy as
it sounds, nobody had told border guards in nearby countries whom to watch for!)
Mr. Shade last came to Burma in 1988 and brought out student leaders to testify
before Congress. He is at it again, working this time to bring back ethnic
leaders to rouse bipartisan congressional support. It seems astonishing that,
but for the intervention of such lone idealists, American strategic
interests--now so embattled everywhere--would go largely undefended in such a
pivotal place.

55 Year old Humanitarian Activist Greg Shade On Burma Border
The Associated Press contributed to this
report, Thurday June 05, 2008
Abstract (Summary)
As Burma's military junta continues to throw up barriers to
bringing much-needed foreign aid into the cyclone-ravaged nation, new video
recently smuggled out of the country shows the intensity of Cyclone Nargis and
the damage it left behind.
Survivors searched for basic necessities and crowded
around cars bringing relief. Some found help at rescue centers set up by local
aid groups.
According to humanitarian groups, handouts seen here were
bought by donations and money funneled into the country partly by
philanthropist-activist Greg Shade and others. Little or no government aid was
reported to have made it to this region when the video was shot.
